Loving Summer

Finally, I'm on summer vacation. For the next 12 days I'm doing nothing but eating, sleeping, hiking, swimming, and laughing.

I went on a beautiful 3-hour hike yesterday up the Moanalua Valley.

There were petroglyphs on some of the rocks about halfway through the hike and on the way back we found some fresh guava fruit to munch on.

I went home, ate some delicious garlic chicken from Mitsuken, a small obento shop in Kalihi on School Street, and then proceeded to take a 2 hour nap. Ahhh, bliss.

After that I busted out my yukata that I received in Japan 2 years ago. I ironed it out and got ready for the Manoa Koganji Temple Bon Dance. After taking numerous pictures with my friend (it felt like prom all over again), we headed off to enjoy the festivities. At the bon dance (which was packed btw), we ate beef stew and got a few andagis to go. Because it's Manoa and the weather's been acting strange this summer, it poured through most of the festival but everyone, including a fabulous Taiko group, toughed it out and enjoyed the festivities. Even Mayor Mufi Hanneman (who was wearing some kind of strange cape) and contestant for Governor Neil Abercrombie were in attendance, shaking everyone's hands and chatting away.

Today, I'm headed to a BBQ. Let the fun continue.
